In most cases, the rules allow you to drive your new motorhome on a standard car licence (category B), providing the motorhome has a maximum authorised mass (MAM, referring to the weight of the vehicle plus the maximum load it is permitted to carry) of 3500kg or less. For any motorhome that weighs more than this – usually the case with A-Class or larger coachbuilt motorhomes between 3500kg and 7500kg – you will be required to obtain a Category C1 classification on your driving licence (if you haven’t already). You must also be aged 18 or over, already hold a valid car licence, and pass a medical examination by your doctor prior to applying to take your test.

There are three main motorhome classes: A-Class (primarily larger motorhomes), B-Class (van conversions) and C-Class (better known as coachbuilt motorhomes), though A-Class and coachbuilt are the most commonly used terms of classification. A-Class motorhomes are also known as ‘integrated’ motorhomes due to their exterior profile – largest in size, they are built on a heavy duty frame with plenty of luxury living space. Coachbuilt motorhomes, are built on a pre-existing chassis cab, which remains a prominent feature following conversion. Within the coachbuilt category, there are two types: low-profile, which is aerodynamic in shape, with little to no overhang on the living space, and ‘over-cab,’ with a visible sleeping area overhang at the front of the vehicle.

Choosing the layout that’s right for you is essential. After all, you’re likely to spend a considerable amount of time sleeping in your motorhome – the perfect haven for you to enjoy some relaxing time after a busy day. Motorhome layouts are often classified by their layout, whether that be island bed, bunk beds or twin bed configurations. Often, the choice will depend on whether you have children holidaying with you – in this case, for example, you may want to look out for motorhomes with twin beds, or one which has a separate bedroom for additional privacy. If you’re travelling as a couple, you may opt for a French, traverse or island bed for the ultimate home-from-home feel. Motorhomes may also be classed according to layout of facilities, for example, front lounge or end washroom – it’s entirely up to you which you choose.
