What is a class A motorhome?

You might find that motorhomes are often referred to as ‘Class A, B or C’. Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes are all types of recreational vehicles, but they differ in terms of size, features, and functionality. A-Class motorhomes are the largest, offering spacious living areas and a multitude of storage facilities. They often come equipped with luxurious amenities such as full kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and large bathrooms.

B-Class motorhomes, also known as camper vans, are smaller and more manoeuvrable. They are converted from regular vans and provide basic amenities such as sleeping quarters, a small kitchenette, and a compact bathroom.

C-Class motorhomes fall in between A-Class and B-Class in terms of size. They typically feature a distinctive cab-over design, providing additional sleeping or storage space. Class C motorhomes also offer various amenities including a kitchen, bathroom, and living area.

Can I tow a caravan with my car?

As of 2021, all drivers are able to tow a trailer or caravan with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 3,500kg without the need of any additional test. Drivers that passed their driving test before 1 January 1997 can drive a vehicle with a trailer or caravan that has a combined weight of up to 8,250kg MAM. Previously, drivers who passed their test after 1 January 1997 faced much tighter restrictions.

In addition to your driving licence, it is important to consider whether your car is suitable to tow your caravan. The maximum weight your car can tow is usually listed in the car’s handbook but remember that this will be based on the weight of a fully loaded car or caravan.
