More UK travellers than ever are embracing the motorhome lifestyle, whether it’s a quick getaway for a weekend, a family road trip for a fortnight, or an adventurous summer-long plan. The appeal centres around the total flexibility – home comforts on the move and the ability to explore hidden gems that traditional travel just can’t reach.

If you’re dreaming of open roads, dramatic landscapes and the freedom to discover new places at your own pace, our closest neighbours offer it all. Motorhoming in Europe might just be your perfect getaway, from coastal roads to mountain passes, and from quaint villages to buzzing cities.

Europe is our playground – and some countries make the experience particularly outstanding. We’ve rounded up our idea of the top five best countries for motorhome holidays in Europe. These are destinations known for stunning scenery, unforgettable road trip routes and motorhome-friendly facilities. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or thinking about buying your very first vehicle, there’s never been a better time to discover the joys of European motorhome travel.

France

Sometimes referred to as ‘The King of Continental Motorhoming’, France is widely regarded as one of the most motorhome-friendly countries in Europe – and for good reason. There is an extensive network of well-maintained roads and a varied landscape, plus thousands of aires – safe, affordable stopover points found in towns, villages and rural beauty spots. These aires often include fresh water, waste disposal, and overnight parking – some are even free. Wild camping is restricted, but may be tolerated in remote areas if done respectfully.

Most motorways operate a toll system, but the scenic D-roads offer more picturesque detours with fewer fees. French roads are generally in excellent condition, with clear signage and plenty of scenic routes. Whether you’re cruising along the Atlantic coast, climbing into the Alps, or meandering through wine country, there are plenty of must-see regions and routes.

  • Loire Valley: Châteaux, vineyards and riverside charm.
  • Provence: Lavender fields, medieval towns and Mediterranean sunshine.
  • Normandy and Brittany: Ideal for a ferry arrival, with dramatic coastlines and rich history.
  • Alsace: Quaint villages, half-timbered houses and local wines.

Germany

Efficient, scenic and surprisingly diverse, Germany might not be the first place you think of for a road trip, but it’s becoming a fast favourite with seasoned travellers. From fairytale forests to alpine lakes, Germany blends natural beauty and cultural depth with top-notch infrastructure. Efficiency shines in Germany when it comes to European motorhome travel.

The country offers an excellent network of widely available and inexpensive stellplätze – motorhome-specific parking areas (similar to French Aires) which are often located near towns, lakes or attractions. They are well-maintained, typically offering water, electricity and waste facilities. Campsites are well-equipped and often beautifully located. Wild camping is generally not permitted but may be tolerated in some areas.

Tolls are rare (except for some tunnels and bridges), and Germany is one of the easiest countries to navigate for motorhomer travellers. The roads are superb, and its famed autobahns, with sections free from speed limits, allow for quick and fuss-free cross-country travel. That said, the best motorhome holidays are found off the fast lane, on scenic routes through forests, mountains and river valleys. There are plenty of must-see regions and routes.

  • Romantic Road: From Würzburg to Füssen, this 350km route is dotted with castles, vineyards and medieval towns.
  • Black Forest: Schwarzwald is a storybook region perfect for hiking, swimming and peaceful camping.
  • Bavarian Alps: Panoramic mountain drives with stops at alpine lakes like Königssee.
  • Moselle Valley: A winding river, terraced vineyards and historic towns such as Cochem and Trier.

Italy

Culture, coastlines, rich history and epic road adventures… Italy offers a feast for holidaymakers looking to travel in style in their new motorhome. Ancient ruins, vibrant cities, sun-drenched beaches and mountain passes are all within reach of the open road. Italian food and hospitality are legendary, and many rural areas offer agriturismi – farm stays that welcome motorhomes, often with delicious local produce on offer.

Italy’s camper-friendly attitude means you’ll find a good number of sostas (motorhome stopovers) and full-service campsites, especially near tourist hotspots. Sostas vary in quality, but many are excellent. Be cautious in cities – narrow streets and ZTL (limited traffic zones) can be tricky. Wild camping is technically illegal but often tolerated in quiet spots.

Motorways are tolled and petrol can be pricey, so it’s worth route-planning. Though Italian roads can be a little rougher and narrower in places compared to France or Germany, the reward lies in the incredible sights and authentic experiences. There are plenty of must-see regions and routes.

  • Tuscany: Rolling hills, vineyards and Renaissance towns like Florence and Siena.
  • Amalfi Coast: A spectacular coastal road, though best tackled in off-season or with a smaller vehicle.
  • Dolomites and Northern Lakes: Alpine scenery, skiing and pristine lakes like Garda and Como.
  • Puglia: Whitewashed towns, olive groves and crystal-clear waters in the south.

Norway

A true wild camper’s paradise, Norway is excellent for nature lovers and seekers of solitude. Towering fjords, dramatic coastlines, endless forests, and midnight sun – it’s a genuine visual spectacle and a peaceful escape rolled into one.

Norway stands out among motorhome-friendly countries in Europe for its progressive laws and untouched landscapes. The country’s Right to Roam (Allemannsretten) allows wild camping in most public places, provided you’re respectful and stay at least 150 metres from private homes. Road conditions are generally excellent, and while distances can be long, every mile brings jaw-dropping views. There’s a growing number of motorhome facilities, and many petrol stations offer basic services like water refills and waste disposal.

Norway can be quite expensive – especially fuel, tolls, and food – but wild camping will help to offset costs. Tolls and ferries are quite common, so you should budget accordingly. Summer is the most accessible season, and thanks to long daylight hours, you’ll have ample time to explore this beautiful country, which has plenty of must-see regions and routes.

  • The Lofoten Islands: Unforgettable views, fishing villages and serene camping spots.
  • Fjord Norway: Geirangerfjord, Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord are a must-see.
  • The Atlantic Road: One of Europe’s most scenic drives with its sweeping sea bridges.
  • Trollstigen and Aurlandsfjellet: Mountain passes that challenge and reward in equal measure.

Spain

With its sunny climate, relaxed pace, and wide variety of landscapes, Spain is the classic country for sun, space and seaside adventure on motorhome road trips. From rugged coastlines to tranquil villages, and from bustling cities to serene sierras, Spain caters well to motorhomers, with hundreds of campsites and an increasing number of areas de autocaravanas. These are designated motorhome stops often found near towns and beaches. In the south, especially Andalusia and the Costa del Sol, there’s a strong community of travellers who overwinter in the warmth.

Motorways are a mix of toll and toll-free, with excellent secondary roads. Wild camping is restricted but possible in quieter areas. Campsites vary in amenities, so it’s worth using the internet to do some research in advance of your trip.

Spain’s climate makes it ideal for year-round travel, though summer heat in the interior can be intense. The country’s laid-back lifestyle is ideal for long, meandering road trips, and there’s something for everyone – beaches for families, mountains for hikers and cities full of cultural intrigue. There are plenty of must-see regions and routes.

  • Andalusia: Moorish palaces, white hill towns and Mediterranean beaches.
  • Catalonia: Combine Barcelona’s buzz with Pyrenean beauty and coastal drives.
  • Galicia and Asturias: Lush green landscapes, fewer tourists, and fresh seafood.
  • Basque Country: Surfer-friendly beaches, gourmet food and dramatic coastline.
